Do you like to go negative when you do your MLB betting? Here’s a look at baseball betting’s worst teams right now, and some of the reasons why they aren’t earning many victories. Kansas City Royals Zach Greinke is the only member of the Royals’ starting staff who has decent numbers, while Gil Meche, Brian Bannister, and Brett Tomko have already combined for 20 losses in just two months. The offense isn’t great either – Kansas City lost 12 straight games between May 19 and May 30, scoring four or more runs in only three of those sports betting contests.
Seattle Mariners The Mariners lost seven in a row from May 20 to May 26 – and they somehow managed to give up 66 runs over those seven online betting contests (and this is a staff that features both Erik Bedard and Felix Hernandez). Seattle also has five regulars hitting below .250 in the lineup, so like the Royals they need help in all areas of the team to get back on track. Baltimore Orioles The Orioles started out well, but series against the Yankees, Red Sox, and Devil Rays over the past couple of weeks have put a serious dent in their record. Baltimore’s starting pitching hasn’t been as bad as predicted (at least not yet), but they need more consistency from core batters like Nick Markakis to compete in the very tough AL East. Detroit Tigers If you had bet against the heavily-hyped Tigers every day starting at the beginning of the season, you’d have a wad of extra cash right now. Of course, as Detroit continues to flounder they’ve become a less lucrative team to bet against. Ace Justin Verlander has ugly numbers through the first two months, and the staff as a whole has not been good. Cleveland Indians Where would the Indians be right now if Cliff Lee didn’t roar out to an 8-1 start to the season? They’d probably be below the Tigers and Royals in the AL Central. Of course, they might end up there anyway if the past two weeks are any indication – the Tribe is scoring one or two runs too often for a team that was supposed to have a strong lineup. Washington Nationals Nationals fans probably wish this team would’ve stayed in Montreal for a few extra seasons, since they obviously aren’t close to being competitive yet. Outfielders Lastings Milledge, Austin Kearns, and Wily Mo Pena have been big disappointments at the plate, so the offense hasn’t been able to help out the pitching much when the games are close. San Francisco Giants Somehow the Giants swept the Diamondbacks last week, which probably kept them out of the basement of the NL West for now. San Francisco does have some talent on their starting staff (Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum), and Aaron Rowand has been producing for them. Still, the Giants’ offense is pretty underwhelming, with the vets prone to injuries. San Diego Padres The Padres also grabbed a bunch of wins last week – thanks to a schedule that had them playing the Nationals and the Giants. With Jake Peavy and Chris Young both on the disabled list San Diego’s starting staff is stretched very thin, and hitters like Khalil Greene, Scott Hairston, Paul McAnulty, and Jody Gerut haven’t been helping too much. Colorado Rockies Like the Tigers, the Rockies would’ve been a great team to bet against starting in April – after last year’s run to the World Series they had high expectations as well. Ace lefthander Jeff Francis’ struggles certainly haven’t helped, and with so many key hitters on the DL the Rockies are probably the worst team in Major League Baseball right now.
