Sunbelt Conference Spotlight Team: Florida Atlantic Owls
The Florida Atlantic Owls are this years sunbelt conference spotlight team.The owls are coming off an impressive 2007 campaign.
The Owls won the sunbelt conference, then beat up on the Memphis Tigers in the Neworleans bowl.
They are led by coach Howard Schnellenberger a known program builder.
Once again they are favorites to win the conference title .
Florida Atlantic brings back 18 returning starters and 55 letterman from last years squad.
Best of all is there returning junior quarterback Rusty Smith,
The 6 foot 5 inch gunslinger was last years sunbelt conference player of the year,and was voted m.v.p. of the Neworleans bowl.
Last season, He threw for nearly 3700 yards and 32 touchdown passes, and now he has 4 of his top 5 offensive lineman returning.
The owls ranked 16th in the nation last year in passing offense and had the 40th best offense overall.
Stats that are sure to improve this year.
The defense is led by senior defensive end Julian Myers and brings back 8 returning starters from last years defense.
The owls are poised to improve upon there 80th ranked defense.
The non-conference schedule is a tough one however as they will travel to Texas to open their season,
and must also travel to Big Ten venues like Michigan St, and Minnesota.
With there powerhouse offense, and improving defense,
This team looks strong enough to win their second straight sunbelt crown and may even surprise some of there non-conference foes.
In the end they should enjoy another sucessful season, and play in another bowl game in 2008-09.
