Ty Lawson should have stayed for one more year at North Carolina. I really don't think he has a good enough jump shot right now to make an immediate impact in the NBA. The role of guards like Lawson in the NBA is to be able to hit open outside shots. You are seeing it now in the NBA Finals with Rondo, who can't hit shots and the Lakers are sagging off of him, clogging the lane. Sure Lawson can lead a fast break and find open players, but he's more like Ed Cota than the next Chris Paul.
I also have to question whether Ty Lawson has the leadership qualities that are needed in the NBA. I have absolutely no doubts that he is committed and works hard on defense, but can he get the rest of his team to do the same? If he had some sort of mentor I think he would really benefit. Phoenix might be the best fit for this young man, with Steve Nash not getting any younger and a fast paced style that fits him perfectly. The problem comes with Steve Kerr changing the whole face of the organization, so I don't know if Lawson fits into the new-Phoenix Suns. However, the Suns are going to need a pure point guard to run the show while Nash gets some rest. Phoenix does currently have Leandro Barbosa, but I think he's more of a shoot first, pass later player who fits in better at the 2. Grant Hill could fill in as a point forward type, but that would surely slow things down. Other teams that I think would be well served by taking Ty Lawson would be the Atlanta Hawks or the Indiana Pacers. I doubt Mike Bibby probably won't be interested in staying in Atlanta after his contract is up. Acie Law didn't come through as expected. The Pacers are tired of the off the court issues that Jamaal Tinsley has brought to the table. |
