NHL | Devils vs Hurricanes
Play on: UNDER 5½ -122

Tuesday NHL Free play. My selection is on the 'under' between New Jersey and Carolina at 7:30 pm et on Tuesday.

Facing elimination on Tuesday night, the Devils know they have to clean things up defensively if they want any chance of extending this series. After surrendering an early lead and ultimately falling 5-2 in Game 4 — with Carolina tacking on an empty-netter late — New Jersey is likely to take a far more cautious approach in this must-win situation. The Devils have actually performed respectably on the defensive end away from home this season, holding opponents to just 2.7 goals per game.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes' defense has been a major story in this series and all season long at home, where they've allowed just 2.4 goals per game. Carolina has shown the ability to lock things down when protecting a lead, and with a chance to advance on home ice, expect a committed defensive effort from Rod Brind'Amour's group.

Three of the four games in this series have stayed 'under' the total of 5.5 goals, and the fact that the Devils are still searching for their first power play goal in the series (0-for-12) only adds to the case for a low-scoring battle. With offense likely hard to come by on both sides and plenty of urgency defensively, the 'under' is the way to go in my opinion.

Take the under.Projected score: Hurricanes 3, Devils 2.
