This is a play on the SAN DIEGO PADRES for our Sunday Free Play. The Padres opened the season 7-0 and then they finally hit the road and it has not been good as the offense has generated two runs total in two games after averaging 5.1 rpg during their winning streak. San Diego did face a pair of quality starters in Matthew Boyd and Shota Imanaga and now they take a step down to get the offense back on track. The pitching has been the real catalyst up until Saturday where they allowed seven runs after giving up 14 runs in their first eight games and they are still No. 3 in MLB with a 2.28 ERA with the second best bullpen after a week and a half of action. Kyle Hart made his first start since 2020 and it was not horrible as he went five innings, allowing five hits and two runs, both on solo home runs and he was in command throughout. The Cubs have won five straight games following a 2-4 start which included a pair of losses in Japan and then a split in Arizona and nothing has been consistently good thus far. The offense is in the top 11 in batting average, OBP, slugging percentage and wOBA but that is bolstered by three big games. The pitching has been lackluster despite a talented rotation as the Cubs have a 4.67 xFIP which is No. 26 in baseball and they send Ben Brown to the hill who was responsible for one of the losses in Japan and was very average in his first start against the Athletics.
